Church of St. Martin

History. The traces of history of Bled Island go back to the prehistoric period (from the 11th to the 8th century B.C.) and Slavic settlement (from the 9th to the 10th century). The ancient Slavic cult area was probably located here in the early Middle Ages, i.e. at the site of the present church.

The South Korean film crew of the popular Black Knight TV series filmed in the Slovenian capital. The episodes featured the works of architect Jože Plečnik. They also used scenes from the Alpine Lake Bled and the Mediterranean town centre of Piran.

Perched on Bled Island, this baroque church is the lake's postcard. Climb the 99 steps, ring the 'wishing bell', and peek at the ornate altar and tower views. It's a quick, classic stop - usually paired with a pletna boat ride.

But be aware – if you swim to the island, you won't be able to explore the church unless you ask someone to bring you clothes by boat. The church is decorated with remains of Mediaeval frescos and a rich Baroque equipment. On visits to the church on Bled Island, don't forget to ring the bell and make a wish.
