Butchers' Bridge (Mesarski Most)

The Dragon Bridge, adorned with its iconic dragon statues, features in some of the most recognisable images of Ljubljana.

The wide bridge before you is Ljubljana's “Butchers Bridge. It got its funny name because it stands near the location where there once stood an old medieval bridge with butcher shops on it.

Thus the city of Ljubljana got money to rebuild the bridge. The funds were used to enlarge the transmission capacity of the bridge by building two extra bridges on each side of the existing one for the pedestrians. This was designed by Plecnik and is believed to be of unique construction.
