What is the history of Durban City Hall?
The City Hall was built in the early 1900s – rapid growth in the city centre resulted in the original town hall becoming the Durban Post Office, just across the road. The city fathers commissioned a new hall in 1903, choosing what they termed a 'bold and progressive' design submitted by architect Stanley Hudson.
Why is the city hall in Pietermaritzburg so famous?
The Pietermaritzburg City Hall, with its 47m high tower, was built from 1893-1900. Even today, this building holds the global record as the largest brick building in existence, but, perhaps more important, is that this impressive red-brick building is equally beautiful.
Who was the architect of Durban City Hall?
The building was designed by architect Stanley G. Hudson and erected between 1906 and 1910.
Why is Durban so famous?
There is no city in South Africa quite like Durban. Because of its subtropical coastal climate, warm seas, safe swimming beaches, its variety of restaurants and nightlife and many sporting facilities, Durban has always been a holiday city, popular with both domestic and international visitors.
