Sacromonte

The Sacromonte Caves, located in the city of Granada, Spain, are a cultural and artistic treasure worth exploring. These caves, carved into the slopes of the Sacromonte hill, have been home to Gypsy and Flamenco communities for centuries.

Today 50,000 Gypsies call Granada home, most of them still in Sacromonte. In most of Spain, Roma are more assimilated into the general population, but Sacromonte is a large, distinct Roma community.

As with most cities you should be more careful in train and bus stations and around toursit attractions. Two areas where there is more petty theft would be the Albaicin and Sacromonte, and as with any places the chances are generallt greater at night.

Sacromonte is known as the gypsy quarter of Granada and is located on the Valparaíso hill, which makes it a bit more distant from the city centre. It is also considered to be the birthplace of flamenco in the city, and one of its main attractions are its cave houses.
