Why does Genève have a water jet?

Do you know the secret of the Jet d'Eau? In 1886 the hydraulic factory that distributed the Rhone's energy to Geneva's craftspeople and watchmakers was forced to create an open-air outlet for the over-pressurised water when the workshops closed in the evening.

How does the Geneva water spout work?

Its own new partially submerged pumping station is powerful enough to propel one cubic metre of water into the air every two seconds. 500 litres of water per second is expelled at a speed of 200km/h. The two pumps – named Jura and Salève by Swiss manufacturer Sulzer – spout seven tonnes of water.

Is Jet d'Eau the tallest fountain?
