Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli

The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major has dominated over the city of Rome for 16 centuries as the Marian shrine par excellence and the cradle of artistic civilization. Located at the summit of the Esquiline Hill, it is one of Rome's four Papal Basilicas.

It was constructed in the 16th century following an original design by Michelangelo Buonarroti. Other architects and artists added to the church over the following centuries. During the Kingdom of Italy, the church was used for religious state functions.

The Santa Maria Church, situated atop a prominent hill in Ilocos Sur, constitutes an outstanding example of Spanish colonial ecclesiastical architecture in the Philippines. Constructed primarily of brick and mortar, the structure demonstrates a unique synthesis of functional, defensive, and religious design principles.
