The Tunis Medina is one of the best-preserved Arab cities in the Maghreb. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, it contains more than 700 monuments — mosques, mausoleums, palaces, madrasas and fountains — within a labyrinth of white-washed alleyways that has barely changed since the Middle Ages.
How old is the Medina in Tunis?
Founded in 698 around the original core of the Zitouna Mosque, the Medina of Tunis developed throughout the Middle Ages. The main axis was between the mosque and the centre of government to the west in the kasbah.
