On 10th January 1901, the square was formally renamed Victoria Square in honour of Queen Victoria, just twelve days before her death, and a marble statue of her, by Thomas Brock, was unveiled. This statue was later recast in bronze in 1951 by William Bloye due to damage from pollution.
