What is Double Dipsea?
Stinson Beach to Mill Valley and back to Stinson again, entirely on the world-famous Dipsea Trail both ways!
This is a handicapped race, so everyone (except the male under 40 division) gets a head start. In 2026 our winner was 66 (female) and our top 10 finishers included 3 females and 7 males with ages ranging from 15 to 67. Waves are adjusted each year, so you never know who might cross the line first.
But it isn t really about the time, it s about the epic journey. Young and old, fast and slow, all are welcome to start and as long as you can make the generous race cutoffs, you can get it done!

Which nights should you book for Double Dipsea?
Book both the night before the race (21 August 2026) and the night after (22 August 2026). Race morning starts before dawn, so arriving the evening prior is essential. Road closures on race day make post-race travel difficult — staying a second night avoids driving tired or navigating disrupted routes.
How do you get to Stinson Beach?
The closest bookable options are all within 0.16 km of Stinson Beach — effectively at the start line. That proximity eliminates walking distance concerns and avoids reliance on vehicles during race-morning road closures. Hotels farther away (6–11 km) require driving or ride-share; services thin out late — check the last departure before you go. None of the listed properties mention lifts, and none are described as having elevators.
Where do you eat and drink after the race?
Stinson Beach has limited dining options immediately adjacent to the start/finish area. Most nearby food and drink is casual and low-key — think cafés, delis, and small coastal restaurants. For more choice, Mill Valley (8.38 km) and Larkspur (8.8 km) offer broader options, but reaching them after the race requires transport.
What is the area around Stinson Beach like?
Stinson Beach is a small, quiet coastal community with beach access, low-rise residential buildings, and minimal commercial infrastructure. It’s relaxed and scenic but not walkable to urban amenities. The immediate area around the start line is residential and quiet, with narrow streets that experience race-day closures. Further afield — Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Larkspur — are more developed towns with shops, cafés, and services, but all require a short drive.
