Overview

This private day tour lasts about 8 to 9 hours and covers key sites in Athens along with a visit to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. It starts with a 90-minute visit to the Acropolis, where travelers see the Parthenon, Propylea, Temple of Athena Nike, Erechtheion, Caryatides, Odeum of Herodus Atticus, Theatre of Dionysus, and Areopagus. Next is a 30-minute stop at the Temple of Olympian Zeus to view its remaining columns and learn about its history. The tour continues with a 30-minute visit to the Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in the 4th century BC and restored in Roman times, which could seat about 50,000 spectators. Guests then see the Arch of Hadrian, an ancient Roman-era triumphal arch marking the boundary between old and new Athens. A 30-minute stop at Mount Lycabettus offers panoramic views of Athens landmarks, including the Acropolis and the Aegean Sea, and features the church of Agios Georgios at its summit. In the city center, the tour pauses at Plateia Syntagmatos (Constitution Square) and the nearby Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded daily by the Evzones. The route passes the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Academy of Athens, and the National Library of Greece. The tour then moves toward the coast, passing through the upscale suburbs of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and Lagonisi on the way to Cape Sounion. At Cape Sounion, guests visit the Temple of Poseidon for about 15 minutes. The temple is made of local marble and features sculpted friezes depicting battles and deeds symbolizing Athenian victories and democracy. Lunch is included at a traditional Greek taverna overlooking the Aegean Sea, where guests can enjoy ouzo and meze. Transportation is in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with a professional English-speaking driver who provides commentary during the drive. Entrance fees are not included, and a licensed guide for inside the sites can be arranged for an additional cost.

The tour begins with a 90-minute visit to the Acropolis, known as the sacred rock. Visitors see the Parthenon dedicated to goddess Athena, the Propylea monumental entrance, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion with its Caryatides statues, the Odeum of Herodus Atticus, the Theatre of Dionysus—the world’s first theatre—and the Areopagus or Mars Hill.

2

Temple of Olympian Zeus

This 30-minute stop shows the Temple of Olympian Zeus, built between 124 and 132 AD. Originally it had rows of columns on all sides and housed statues of Zeus and the emperor. Sixteen columns survive, thirteen intact on the east side, and one on the west side collapsed in 1852.

3

Panathenaic Stadium

Originally a natural hollow between the hills of Agra and Ardettos over the Ilissos river, it was converted into a stadium by Lykourgos in 330-329 BC for the Great Panathinaea athletic competitions. Between 140 and 144 AD, Herodes Atticus restored it to the form found in the 1870 excavation: a horseshoe-shaped structure with a track 204,07 meters long and 33,35 meters wide. The stadium is believed to have seated 50,000 people. Separating scales were built between tiers, and a portico with Doric columns was located at the base of the sphendone, with another portico on the facade. During Roman times, it was used as an arena, adding a semi-circular wall on the north side corresponding to the southern side's splendor.
