Overview

The tour begins with pickup from your Athens hotel, apartment, or Piraeus port. You travel by private car with air conditioning and onboard WiFi. The driver, who provides historical commentary but is not a licensed guide, will take you to the Acropolis, the ancient city’s highest point. Here, you spend about half an hour walking among the monuments where philosophy and politics once thrived. You then spend about five minutes at the Propylaea, the grand entrance to the Acropolis built after the Persian Wars. Next is a 30-minute visit to the Parthenon, the ancient temple famous for its architecture and sculptures. The tour continues with 15 minutes at the Erechtheion, a temple dedicated to Athena and Poseidon, followed by 15 minutes at the Temple of Athena Nike located on a bastion at the Acropolis’s southwest corner. Afterward, you visit the Theatre of Dionysus for 15 minutes. This ancient theatre hosted dramatic festivals in classical Athens. A 15-minute stop follows at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman-era stone theater restored in 1950. You then pass the Arch of Hadrian, a Roman-style gateway near the Temple of Olympian Zeus, whose remains you also see. Next is a 10-minute visit to the Panathenaic Stadium, built of Pentelic marble and site of the first modern Olympic Games. The tour then drives to Lycabettus Hill for about 20 minutes to take in views over Athens combining ancient and modern cityscapes. A visit to Syntagma Square follows, including a photo stop of the national guards and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a war memorial guarded by the Evzones. The route passes important landmarks such as the Academy of Athens, the National Library, and the University of Athens. The final city stop is the Plaka district, known for its narrow streets and neoclassical buildings near the Acropolis. Optional visits are available by selecting extended tour options: the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, or the Ancient Agora area, which includes the Temple of Hephaestus, the Ancient Agora itself, and the Roman Agora with the Tower of the Winds. Entrance fees are not included but can be arranged separately. The total tour lasts about four to six hours and includes private transportation, bottled water, and hotel or port pickup and drop-off.
