by Historic London Tours
This walking tour covers about two miles around London’s Borough and Bankside areas and lasts approximately two hours. It begins outside Borough Station and ends near London Bridge Station with a maximum of fifteen participants. A guide leads the group through locations connected to the area's history of booze, brothels, and William Shakespeare, known as the Bard. The tour highlights the bawdy past of the area, including its long history of prostitution dating back to Roman times. Participants visit St George the Martyr, the only remaining part of the Marshalsea Prison, and the Crossbones Graveyard and Garden of Remembrance, where thousands of Southwark’s outcast dead are buried. The route includes a stop at the largest surviving reminder of Southwark’s beer trade and London’s last surviving galleried coaching inn. The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret, Europe’s oldest surviving operating theatre, is also on the itinerary. The group crosses London Bridge and visits Southwark Anglican Cathedral, London’s oldest surviving gothic church. The tour continues to Borough Market, a food market active for around a thousand years, then to the ruins of Winchester Palace, a medieval noble residence. The Clink Prison Museum, located on the site of the notorious Clink Prison, is another stop. The tour concludes at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, a faithful reconstruction of the original playhouse associated with the Bard. Gratuities are not included.
