Overview

This three-hour small group walking tour in Carmel-by-the-Sea includes guided stops at six to seven restaurants and specialty food shops. The group is generally limited to 16 participants, allowing for more interaction with the guide. The tour begins at the Sunset Cultural Center, identified by its tall Gothic-style arch and large windows, located at the intersection of 9th and San Carlos streets. Participants meet their guide in the courtyard before setting off. During the walk, the guide shares local history, cultural information, and architectural notes about Carmel. Guests sample a variety of foods that together amount to a full lunch. Tastings may include offerings from a classic European restaurant, a tavern with mixed fermentation brews, fresh tortilla purveyors, and a confectionery using century-old recipes. Some stops feature tableside food preparation or products like honey made by local producers, including a company started by a fifth grader. All food and beverages are included in the price. The tour moves at a leisurely pace through Carmel’s streets and passageways, providing opportunities to meet business owners when possible. This tour suits visitors and local residents interested in food and culture. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and note that the minimum age for alcohol consumption is 21 years. Dietary restrictions must be communicated before booking to allow for accommodations.
