Overview

Rome's Colosseum is one of the largest amphitheaters built in the Roman Empire and a key landmark of the city. This small group tour lasting about two and a half hours takes visitors inside the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Guests enter the Colosseum through the Gladiator Gate, which leads directly to the arena floor. Standing on this floor allows a view similar to that of the gladiators before combat. The guide explains the fighting styles and daily lives of the gladiators, then leads the group up to the spectator stands to describe the various games, animal hunts, and events held there. After the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Roman Forum, the center of ancient Rome's public life. Visitors see the remains of government buildings, temples, and streets, including the senate house, the temple of the Vestal Virgins, and the Temple of Julius Caesar. Walking on the ancient road built by Emperor Augustus, guests observe ruins that reflect Rome's early development. The final stop is Palatine Hill, where emperors built their palaces and where Rome's founder Romulus is said to have lived. The guide walks the group through the palace ruins, sharing stories of the emperors and Roman history. From here, guests can view the Circus Maximus, the site of chariot races, and Emperor Domitian's private stadium. The tour includes entry tickets with arena access, reservation fees, headsets when suitable, and a certified expert guide.
