Overview

This full-day biking tour from La Paz covers the route known as Death Road, officially called El Camino de la Muerte. The tour starts early with a hotel pickup at 7:00 AM, heading to the summit near La Paz at 3,600 meters (11,810 feet) at the base of the Cordillera Real de los Andes. Along the way, participants see the high plateau’s desert flora and fauna as well as the snow-capped mountains. At 9:00 AM, equipment is checked and instructions are given, followed by hot refreshments. The biking begins on asphalt in cool weather, continuing to the town of Unduavi where there is a rest stop with refreshments and a control checkpoint for motorized vehicles. Around 10:30 AM the route changes to a dirt road at 2,700 meters altitude, entering a subtropical area and the Bolivian jungle via the steep, narrow Death Road. The descent passes streams, waterfalls, and diverse plant and animal life. There is a midday break to rest and refresh. The biking portion ends at 1,200 meters (3,940 feet) by a bridge in a warm climate. After the ride, travelers transfer 35 minutes to Dos Rios hotel near Coroico to shower, eat lunch, and relax by the pool or common areas. The return trip to La Paz takes place at 4:30 PM via the Santa Barbara Cotapata highway, arriving around nightfall. The tour is conducted by professional bilingual guides in shared tourist transport with mountain bikes and full protective gear including helmets, knee pads, knuckles, and gloves. Snacks, a buffet lunch at the hotel, unlimited bottled water, altitude jackets and trousers, and an altitude shirt souvenir are included. Photos and videos from the tour are available online. Hot showers, soap, towels, and access to hotel common areas are provided. Travel insurance, tips, and entrance fees at Unduavi are not included.
