Overview

Turnagain Arm is a coastal inlet in Alaska known for its mountainous backdrop and diverse wildlife. This full-day bus tour lasts about six hours and features narration by a local guide who points out the area's glaciers, wildflowers, bald eagles, Dall sheep, and beluga whales. The tour begins with a hotel pickup in Anchorage by a Mercedes Sprinter van. It then follows the Seward Highway, a National Scenic Byway between the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm waters. Along this route, the guide stops as needed to view wildlife and shares local history. At Beluga Point, the group pauses to watch for beluga whales in the water and Dall sheep on the cliffs, with views of the Chugach Mountains. Next, the tour visits the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a sanctuary in Portage Valley where visitors see brown bears, moose, caribou, muskox, and other Alaskan animals in large natural enclosures. Afterward, the trip continues through Portage Valley to observe glaciers such as Explorer and Byron Glaciers and includes a short walk through the surrounding mossy northern rainforest. Lunch is provided in Girdwood, a small ski town surrounded by temperate rainforest, where visitors can enjoy food from local trucks and optional local beer at the Girdwood Brewing Company. The return trip follows the Seward Highway back to Anchorage with drop-off at the original hotel or another city location. Bottled water and gratuities are included, while alcoholic beverages are not.
