Overview

Southeastern Armenia features several notable sites including Areni village, Tatev Monastery, and Khndzoresk caves. This group tour begins at Hyur Service, the starting and ending point. The first stop is Hin Areni Winery in Areni village, a region known for its 6,000-year-old winemaking tradition. Guests tour the winery, which combines ancient methods with modern equipment, and join a wine tasting session. The winery can process over 250 tonnes of grapes annually. Next, the tour continues to Tatev Monastery, an important medieval religious and strategic center of the Syunik kingdom. The monastery is located on a naturally protected site and once included secret paths connecting it to the surrounding canyon. Visitors spend about an hour and a half exploring the complex. The tour also includes a 15-minute ride on the Wings of Tatev Ropeway, the world’s longest reversible cable car extending 5.7 kilometers across the Vorotan River gorge. The ropeway has two cabins operating simultaneously, each holding 30 passengers, and is supported by three towers. This tramway was inaugurated in 2010 to provide access to the Tatev Monastery from the village of Halidzor. Finally, the tour visits Khndzoresk, located 8 kilometers from Goris. This village is known for its cave dwellings on steep slopes and a new swinging bridge that spans 160 meters in length and stands 63 meters above the gorge floor. The 1.5-meter-wide bridge can hold up to 700 people at once. Khndzoresk served as a stronghold during the Syunik national liberation movement and is the burial place of the Armenian commander Mkhitar Sparapet and his family. The full tour lasts about 14 to 15 hours and is conducted by bus with air conditioning and WiFi. Included are wine tasting, bottled water, pastries, admission tickets, and a guide speaking English and Russian consecutively. Lunch and hotel transfers are not included.
