Overview

This 2-hour small-group tour begins with pickup from the cruise ship dock in Ketchikan. Guests travel by vehicle along a scenic coastal route to the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States. During the drive, the guide provides commentary on Ketchikan’s local history and environment. Upon arrival at the rainforest trailhead, guests walk an easy nature trail for about 40 minutes, covering one to one and a half miles on a gravel path. The trail features giant trees, moss-covered forest floor, and a stop at a waterfall with a bench for resting. After the walk, bottled water and a snack of smoked salmon dip with crackers are provided. The tour then continues to Totem Bight State Historical Park, where visitors spend approximately 30 minutes viewing Alaska Native totem poles set against the Pacific Ocean. Inside the historic clan house, the guide explains the culture and stories of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples, including the meanings of the carvings. Transportation back to the cruise ship dock is included. Group size is limited to 11 guests. The tour operates in all weather conditions and may change trail or park locations depending on current conditions. Rain ponchos or umbrellas are available. Optional activities for children include scavenger hunts and geocaching. Child car seats or booster seats can be provided if requested in advance.
