Overview

The tour begins on foot at Île de la Cité, the oldest part of Paris formerly known as Lutetia. From there, participants walk to see the exterior of Notre-Dame Cathedral, a major Gothic landmark. The route continues past the Fontaine Saint-Michel, a fountain depicting the archangel Michael defeating the Devil. The group then visits Shakespeare and Company, a famous bookstore linked to mid-20th century literary figures. Next, the Melkite Greek Catholic parish church Saint Julien le Pauvre is viewed, followed by the Roman Catholic church Saint Séverin, one of the oldest Left Bank churches still in use. The walking tour proceeds to the Musée de Cluny, a museum built partly on Roman bath ruins and displaying collections from the 1st to 15th centuries. Participants then approach the historic Sorbonne University, a central institution in French higher education history. The exterior of the Panthéon is next, a former church now housing the remains of notable French citizens. The tour concludes at the Luxembourg Gardens, a 25-hectare park created in 1612 on the border of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter. If time allows, the guide will show the church of Saint-Étienne du Mont, containing the shrine of St Geneviève and the tomb of Jean Racine, and pass by the Wall of Philip II Augustus, Paris’s oldest city wall built before the Third Crusade. The full walking tour lasts about two and a half hours and is led by a private guide unless a small-group option is selected. Guests choose either a morning or afternoon start time when booking.
