Overview

This cultural day trip from Athens lasts about 13 and a half hours and includes transport by luxury coach with air conditioning. You start by meeting at one of four central pickup points in Athens, then travel in a small group to Meteora, enjoying countryside views along the roughly four-hour bus ride. You arrive at Kalabaka around noon, where you can choose to have a traditional lunch with vegan and vegetarian options. The tour includes a visit to the Hermit Caves near Kastraki village, known locally as the caves of Badovas. These caves, used by monks in the 14th century, lie between Kalabaka and Kastraki and are surrounded by tall rock pillars called Pyxari and Amparia. Next, you meet the local guide to explore the Meteora rock formations, made of sandstone and conglomerate and inhabited since about 50,000 years ago. The guide provides historical information about the six active Eastern Orthodox monasteries built on these natural pillars starting in the 14th century. You can enter three of the monasteries to see the monks’ way of life, using a multilingual audioguide available in eight languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, and Chinese. Entrance fees to monasteries are not included and cost 3 euros per monastery. After the visit, the coach takes you back to Athens, with drop-offs at the original four pickup points. The trip includes an English-speaking guide, round-trip coach tickets, pickup from four central points in Athens, the audioguide, and lunch if selected. Drinks and entrance fees are not included.
