The monastery is home to la Moreneta, the Black Madonna statue, believed to have been found by Benedictine monks who built the monastery around it. Since 1987, Montserrat has been a national park and a pilgrimage site. Visitors take a 45-minute guided tour, then have two hours to explore independently. La Escolania, one of Europe’s oldest boys’ choirs, performs during religious ceremonies and can be heard on the 9.30 am tour.
