The tour begins with a check-in at the Dark Sky Project in Lake Tekapo, followed by a transport ride up to the summit of Mount John, which is 1,029 metres above the township and surrounded by mountains and lakes. At the summit, guests have exclusive access to the University of Canterbury’s Mt. John Observatory for about 90 minutes of stargazing. During the session, expert astronomy guides lead the group in observing the night sky using advanced telescopes and laser pointers for naked-eye viewing. The site is located within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the largest Gold standard reserve worldwide. The guides provide scientific explanations and stories about various celestial objects including the Milky Way, planets, star clusters, constellations, and distant galaxies. The experience lasts about 105 minutes total and includes return transport from Tekapo township, use of extreme cold weather jackets, and guidance in either English or Mandarin. Meals and hotel pickup or drop-off are not included. This tour is only suitable for participants who can communicate in the tour language and is not recommended for those with mobility challenges.
