by Dark Sky Project
This 90-minute stargazing experience takes place at Cowan's Private Observatory in Lake Tekapo, located within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The tour begins with a 15-minute check-in at the Dark Sky Project base, followed by a short shuttle ride to the observatory, which is set inside a large purpose-built crater to protect from wind and light pollution. This setting provides a comfortable environment for all guests, including families and children. At the observatory, participants spend about 75 minutes observing the Southern skies through powerful telescopes. An expert astronomy guide uses handheld lasers to point out stars, planets, galaxies, and features of the Milky Way visible that night. The guide adjusts the commentary based on the current night sky, helping guests understand what they see. Return transport to the Dark Sky Project base is included. The entire stargazing session takes place within the largest Gold Standard International Dark Sky Reserve, known for its dark, clear skies ideal for astronomy. Food, drinks, and hotel transfers are not included. Guests should dress warmly year-round and be aware that children must be accompanied by adults. The tour requires participants to speak the language used by the guide for safety reasons. If weather conditions prevent the tour, an alternate indoor experience may be provided.
