by Icelandic Mountain Guides
Mýrdalur is known for its black lava sands formed by volcanic activity. This quad bike tour lasts about two hours and covers the black lava fields in the area. Participants ride ATVs designed for two people, with an English-speaking guide leading the way. The tour includes an insulated cover-all, helmet, and balaclava face mask for protection against the cold. Drivers must have a valid driver's license to operate the vehicles. Food, drinks, and hotel transfers are not included. Groups with an odd number of riders must book a single ride paid on location. Participants should arrive at the meeting point 30 minutes before the tour starts and dress warmly as the tour runs in cold weather. Each adult may accompany one youth; additional youths require another adult to join.
Mýrdalsjökull Base and Black Lava Sands
The tour starts at a base near the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in South Iceland, where the plan and safety instructions are reviewed. From there, participants cross small rivers and proceed to the black lava sand fields formed by the dormant volcano Katla. At the black beach, there is a stop to view the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the southern peninsula Dyrhólaey along the coast. The route continues along the shore to the aircraft wreck, then to the river Jökulsá and the mountain's base. The return follows the mountain back to the base. The ATV ride lasts about 2 hours, with two people per ATV, one driving and one passenger. Single riders or odd-numbered groups incur an extra local charge. No prior ATV experience is needed, and all necessary equipment is provided.
