by Icelandic Mountain Guides
This small-group hiking tour begins at the basecamp near the Sólheimajökull Glacier in Vik. Participants start by receiving coffee or tea and are fitted with glacier gear, including crampons, harness, ice axe, and helmet. A certified glacier guide leads the group onto the glacier, where hikers spend about an hour walking on ice, stopping frequently to examine crevasses, ice ridges, sinkholes, and moulins. The guide explains how the glacier constantly changes and shapes the surrounding landscape. The hike lasts around three hours in total and includes access to toilet facilities at the basecamp. The tour is designed to be accessible for first-time glacier hikers, balancing adventure with safety and education.
Sólheimajökull Base Camp
At Sólheimajökull Base Camp, a certified glacier guide provides crampons, helmet, harness, and an ice axe. After a safety briefing, participants walk a short distance to the glacier to begin the hike. The guided walk includes exploring ice formations, crevasses, and varying glacier ice colors from clear to deep blue. The guide explains glacier formation, movement, volcanic interactions, and climate change impacts. This moderate glacier hike requires no technical skills and proceeds at a relaxed pace with photo opportunities.
