Overview

This day trip in San Francisco lasts about seven and a half hours and includes visits to Alcatraz Island, Muir Woods National Monument, and the town of Sausalito. The tour begins with a narrated bus ride departing from Union Square. The bus passes through neighborhoods such as Van Ness Avenue, known for its role in the 1906 earthquake firebreak, and Cow Hollow, an area with shops and restaurants. The bus crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and stops for approximately ten minutes at the Golden Gate North Vista Point for photos of the bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco skyline. After entering Marin County through the Robin Williams Tunnel, the bus continues to Muir Woods National Monument. Visitors spend about ninety minutes in Muir Woods, where they can see large redwood trees and local wildlife including Steller’s jays and banana slugs. The tour then proceeds to Sausalito, a Mediterranean-style village with shops, art galleries, and waterfront restaurants. Guests have one hour of free time in Sausalito and may choose to extend their stay by returning to San Francisco via ferry; ferry costs are not included unless selected during booking. The final part of the trip is the visit to Alcatraz Island. Upon arrival at Pier 33, guests receive their official Alcatraz admission tickets, which include ferry transport and a cellhouse audio tour. The visit to Alcatraz typically takes about two hours, including an approximately forty-five-minute audio tour. Visitors may spend as long as they like on the island, with ferries departing every thirty to sixty minutes. After disembarking from Alcatraz, the bus portion of the tour ends, and guests are responsible for their own transportation onward. The tour includes narrated bus transportation, admission to Muir Woods, and Alcatraz ferry and audio tour tickets. Gratuities, meals, hotel pickup or drop-off, and transportation after the Alcatraz visit are not included. Reservations require full names and ages of all participants and are finalized five days before the tour date, with no changes allowed after that. Alcatraz tickets are refundable if canceled at least five days before departure.
