This tour begins with a ride in an open-air Jeep on rugged off-road trails through the Tonto National Forest, located north of Scottsdale, Arizona. The Jeep models used are modified Gladiator vehicles with vertical-row sideways seating for 14 passengers and Jeep YJ models seating 7. The tour lasts about two hours, depending on the season, and includes a stop at a viewpoint overlooking the historic Great Western Trail just as the sun sets, weather permitting. The guide provides information about the plants, animals, and Native American history of the Sonoran Desert during the drive. The trailhead is about 15 minutes northeast of the operator's office and the route passes through areas including Pinnacle Peak Park, a granite summit rising 3,169 feet, and the remaining buildings of an old western town nearby. Bottled water is supplied on the tour. Guests must wear closed-toed shoes and be prepared for a bumpy, low-speed ride on uneven terrain. The tour is guided only; participants do not drive the Jeep. Temperatures can drop about 20 degrees after sunset from November to February, so warm clothing is recommended during these months. The operator enforces safety and health restrictions, including weight limits of 275 pounds per seat, no participation for pregnant individuals or guests with neck problems, and a requirement to be physically able to climb into the lifted Jeeps.
