Overview

This 3-4 hour gentle bike tour covers key sites in south Kyoto using quiet backstreets for a relaxed ride. The tour begins at the operator’s shop where participants meet the guide, get fitted with a high-quality Cannondale bike and helmet, and receive bottled water. The first stop is Nishi Honganji, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world and a less visited temple, where riders spend about fifteen minutes. The route then follows the Takase Canal, offering a calm cycling path with information about its historical significance. Next, the tour continues into Gion, Kyoto’s geisha district, with a fifteen-minute stop to walk the streets and learn about the traditional teahouses and entertainers. After Gion, the ride proceeds to Tofuku-ji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest and largest Zen temples, where participants pause for around five minutes on the bridge overlooking the temple grounds. The final destination is Fushimi Inari Shrine, the most visited attraction in Kyoto. The guide leads the group along a less crowded route through the famous orange Torii gates for about twenty-five minutes. The tour provides a clear and concise overview of south Kyoto’s main sights in a nutshell. Included are the use of the bike, helmet, and bottled water. Riders must be at least thirteen years old and comfortable riding a bike. Gratuities are not included.
