by Bub Activity Center
This activity takes place indoors in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, Japan. Each participant makes their own Japanese knife by first choosing the type of knife to create. Over about 90 minutes, they shape and sharpen the blade. Then, they attach a custom Magnolia wood handle using a hammer. Participants engrave their name in Japanese on the handle. Tea and coffee are provided during the session. A guide is present throughout to assist with the process. All fees and taxes are included. Each participant receives a custom-designed key-holder as a gift. Optional knife care kits are available for purchase. Larger knives are not included in this workshop.
Knife-Sharpening Introduction
Wear a light haori jacket provided to protect clothing from stains. Sit down and enjoy tea or juice while learning about the history and culture of Japanese knives and swords from a Japanese master. Select a blade type to sharpen from up to five options, some requiring a small extra fee, and choose the knife size. Sharpen the blade through a focused, meditative process with support from English-speaking staff who offer guidance and conversation. Engrave sakura designs or a name in Japanese on the handle and attach it using a traditional hammer. Observers accompanying participants must pay an observation fee on site.
