Overview

This shared walking tour in York lasts between one and three hours. It begins inside The Guy Fawkes Inn on High Petergate, opposite Michael Le Belfrey's church, where the guide explains the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot at his birthplace. The route continues to Minster Yard where the guide covers the full history of York Minster, including its medieval carvings and construction, with a chance to speak to stone masons. Next, the group visits Museum Gardens to learn about its historical significance and may meet falconers with birds of prey. Within the gardens, the tour stops at St. Mary's Abbey to discuss its history. The walk proceeds to Shambles Market and The Shambles, some of York’s oldest streets, with stories that range from astonishing to grim. The tour also includes a visit to the Parish of All Saints' Pavement church with its notable history, followed by the Shrine of Saint Margaret Clitherow, where her life and story are explained. Finally, the tour reaches Clifford's Tower for a 30-minute stop to hear about its royal connections and some of its more gruesome historical events.
