Overview

This small-group bus tour from Athens lasts about 12 hours and includes a maximum of 8 guests. The tour first passes by Marathon, the site of the original marathon race and the 490 BC battle against the Persians, and then continues to the mountain ski resort village of Arachova for a 30-minute stop. Next, the group spends two hours visiting the archaeological site of Delphi, including the museum, the Tholos, the Temple of Athena, and the Kastalia spring. A guidebook with photos and descriptions of the Delphi monuments is provided, since guides are not allowed at the site. While driving after Delphi, the guide explains various Greek myths, history, and religious beliefs such as the Eleusinian mysteries. Lunch is served at a traditional restaurant in Delphi with views over the valley of olive trees. After lunch, the tour continues with an off-road drive to the Corycian Cave, located at 1400 meters (4593 feet) altitude. This cave was the earliest oracle at Delphi from 4000 BC and contains rock carvings of Pan and the Corycia naiad. The final stop is at Thermopylae for 30 minutes, where guests see the monument to Leonidas and the 300 Spartans. The guide describes the battle, the path revealed by a traitor to the Persians, and Kolonos hill where the last Spartan died defending King Leonidas’ body. The tour includes bottled water, air conditioning on the vehicle, and the Delphi guidebook. Tickets for the archaeological site and museum, as well as lunch, are not included.
