Overview

This 3-hour boat excursion departs from Ward Cove in Ketchikan, where guests can see remnants of the largest pulp mill once operating in the United States. The vessel leaves the dock and travels into more remote waters while the guide explains the industries that shaped the region. The tour passes Totem Bight State Historical Park, providing views from the water of Alaska native clan houses and totem poles. The guide shares a legend about one of the poles and discusses local Alaska native cultures. Along the shoreline, guests see many local homes, some located on private islands, with commentary about life in this remote part of Alaska. The boat then approaches Guard Island Lighthouse, allowing guests to view its architecture and learn about its history, along with panoramic views of the surrounding seascape. Next, the vessel cruises along the coastline of Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest in the world, where dense stands of Sitka spruce, Western Hemlock, Red and Yellow Cedar, and Red Alder cover the islands. During the tour, guests have opportunities to observe bald eagles in their natural environment. Onboard restrooms are available. Tea, coffee, carbonated beverages, and snacks are included. Waterproof, fogproof Bushnell binoculars are provided for guest use throughout the excursion.
