Overview

This 2-3 hour cultural tram tour takes place on Kolkata's historic tram network, the only one operating in India and Asia's oldest electric tram system since 1902. Depending on group size, the ride is on reserved tramcars for groups over 12 or unreserved tramcars for smaller groups. The tour covers numerous heritage sites across the city while traveling by tram. Stops include Birla Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu avatars; Lower Circular Road Cemetery with graves of British East India Company employees and two WWII Commonwealth war graves; and the Portuguese Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, built in the 1830s after a local incident involving Luis De Souza. Other visits pass by Maulana Azad College near Lotus crossing, the Tipu Sultan Shahi Mosque constructed by Tipu Sultan's son in Kolkata, and Thoburn Memorial Methodist Church, established in 1873. The Lord Jesus Church, formerly Presbyterian and now Jesuit-run since 1969, is also included. The route features the birthplace of Calcutta Tramways and ends with a 30-minute stop at Mother House, where St. Teresa is buried. Onboard amenities include WiFi, bottled water, tea, coffee, and local snacks. A Kolkata Heritage Tram souvenir is provided as part of the tour.
