This tour follows the history of the Horahora Dam and village as it moves along Lake Karapiro’s southern edge. The trip begins in late afternoon or early evening from Riverside Adventures' base in South Waikato. Paddlers cross over the submerged remains of the Horahora Dam, once a power source for the Waihi goldfields. After learning about the local history, the group enjoys the quiet of the water at twilight. When night falls, the kayak moves slowly up the Pokaiwhenua Stream through a canyon formed by centuries of water flow. Native trees and ferns line the banks and birds are often heard nearby. The return trip is taken silently downstream, guided by the glowworms glowing on both sides of the stream. The whole kayak tour lasts about three and a half hours. Kayak, personal flotation device, splash pants and jackets, and wet shoes are provided, but food and drink are not included.
