Overview

This three-hour evening cultural experience at Mitai Maori Village in Rotorua introduces the local history and traditions of the Māori people. Visitors first watch warriors dressed in traditional clothing paddle a waka (warrior canoe) along the Wai-o-Whiro stream. Following this, a Māori cultural performance includes music, instruments, and haka. After the performance, the traditional Māori Hangi meal is served from a buffet with several side dishes and dessert. Guests can enjoy tea and coffee during the meal. The evening continues with a guided walk through the surrounding forest where the guide explains native plants and animals. The walk also visits an ancient fortified village site (pā) and the freshwater spring called Te Puna a Tuhoe. As darkness falls, the walk ends near areas where glow worms illuminate the forest banks. Courtesy transfers are available from some Rotorua accommodations. Alcoholic drinks can be purchased but are not included. The tour runs regardless of weather, and participants should wear warm clothes and suitable shoes.
