The Lava Centre in Vik is an interactive exhibition about volcanoes and earthquakes that have shaped Iceland. Visitors spend between one hour and ninety minutes exploring displays that explain how Iceland formed over millions of years from volcanic activity along the North Atlantic Ridge. The exhibition describes the movement of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, which separate by about twenty kilometres every million years, and the role of a mantle plume that adds molten rock beneath the island. The centre includes a replica of the magma plume under Iceland and an earthquake simulator that recreates shaking sensations. A cinema shows a film about recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland. Visitors can choose to see the exhibition only, the cinema only, or both combined. Outside, there is a viewing platform offering views of the surrounding area. The Lava Centre is located on the main road east of Reykjavík and serves as an entry point to Iceland’s South Coast and the Katla Geoopark.
