Overview

The Leonardo Da Vinci Museum in Florence exhibits the largest private collection of machines designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The collection was started by Carlo Niccolai, born in 1936, whose family are skilled craftsmen who have built 250 models and 50 interactive machines based on Leonardo’s historical designs. These models use materials typical of Leonardo’s era such as wood, metal, ropes, and fabrics. The museum covers 850 square meters over three floors. The exhibition includes more than 50 models displayed in four rooms at the Galleria Michelangelo, located in a central street of Florence where the Macchiaioli artists used to meet. Visitors can see civil machines in the largest room, flying machines in the second, war machines in the third, and anatomical models in the fourth. Many of these machines are functional. A documentary about Leonardo’s life and work plays on large screens. The museum also has a partnership with Caffé Michelangiolo, located in the exhibition area. A bookshop offers various publications and souvenirs. The visit usually lasts between one hour and one and a half hours. The ticket includes entry to the museum only; food, drinks, and transfers are not included.
