Overview

Dharavi is among Asia's largest slums and supports a local economy estimated at about 1 billion US dollars annually, largely driven by recycling industries. Mumbai produces over 6,500 tons of waste daily, with more than 85 percent recycled, much of it processed within Dharavi. This area is home to a diverse population, ranging from very poor residents to some who earn millions by producing various goods. The slum operates like a small city within Mumbai, with a strong sense of community and many hardworking people. This 3- to 4-hour day trip is conducted by a guide who lives in the slum, offering an authentic perspective on Dharavi’s economic and social life. The tour takes place mostly on foot through the narrow lanes, showcasing the recycling businesses and other industries such as leather, pottery, and dyeing. The trip aims to present the real side of Dharavi, beyond common assumptions, by meeting local residents and seeing their daily work and lifestyle. Included in the tour are bottled water, on-board WiFi, air conditioning during transport, and hotel or port pickup and drop-off. Food and drinks are not included.
