Overview

This tour begins with an early departure from Sorrento in an air-conditioned vehicle to avoid traffic and crowds, allowing priority skip-the-line entry to the archaeological site of Pompeii. The round-trip journey and visit last about five hours in total. Upon arrival, an official guide leads a two-and-a-half-hour walking tour through Pompeii, explaining the layout and history of the ancient Roman city buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The group walks along the main streets called cardini and decumani, exploring remains of baths, bakeries, forums, and other structures that illustrate daily life in Pompeii. Key stops include the Civil Forum, the center of public and administrative life; the Temple of Jupiter, located on the north side of the Forum; and the Macellum marketplace, which features areas for imperial cult worship and fish sales. The tour continues along Via dell’Abbondanza, the ancient main street lined with shops and eateries, and visits the Forum Baths, which have separate men’s and women’s sections with various bathing rooms. The Lupanar, Pompeii’s official brothel known for its erotic frescoes and graffiti, is also included. Other highlights are the House of the Faun, a large and richly decorated residence famous for the Alexander Mosaic, and the Basilica, used for business and justice administration. The tour concludes with a visit to the Large Theater, built into a hillside for Greco-Roman tragedies. Headphones are provided for groups larger than ten to ensure clear audio from the guide. Food and drinks are not included in the tour.
