Overview

This private day tour lasts about 8 to 9 hours and covers Mount Vesuvius, the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, with pickup from your accommodation, port, train station, or airport. The tour begins at Pompeii, where a licensed guide meets you at the main gate after tickets are purchased. You will spend around two hours exploring the ancient city’s ruins, including the Civil Forum, Basilica, small cook-shops, Casa del Fauno, Casa dei Vettii, Stabian Baths, and the Grand Theatre. After Pompeii, there is a brief visit to one of the city’s gates, known as the most impressive of the seven, before you travel to Herculaneum. Upon arrival, you meet a licensed guide at the main gate after buying tickets and tour the ruins for about 1 hour and 40 minutes. Highlights include the Casa dei Cervi and the recently restored remains of a boat found in the marina area where 300 skeletons were uncovered. The tour continues with a visit to the Vesuvius National Park. You start from a square at 1,000 meters above sea level, where there is an information point about the park and maps available for purchase. From here, you will have a view of the northern side of Mount Somma and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Afterward, there is a drive to the trailhead closest to the summit followed by a 35-minute walk to the top of Mount Vesuvius, then a 35-minute walk back down. The return drive to the highway takes about 40 minutes. Bottled water and driver services are provided throughout. Tickets to Pompeii and Herculaneum, a professional guide, and transfers are included if selected, but lunch and Vesuvius entrance fees are not included.
