Overview

This tour in Juneau lasts about five and a half hours and includes a guided canoe paddle and hike at Mendenhall Glacier. It begins at Mendenhall Lake, where participants receive paddling and safety instructions along with all necessary equipment, including rain gear and rubber boots. The group paddles across the lake in spacious canoes, passing Arctic tern nesting areas and Nugget Falls. On the way, there are views of the glacier and nearby icebergs. Upon reaching the glacier’s edge, the group leaves the canoes to hike about two miles roundtrip over rocky terrain near the glacier. The guide explains the glacier’s rapid recession and points out features such as crevasses and the ice fall at the glacier’s toe. This tour does not include walking on the glacier but offers close views of its changing ice formations. After the hike, participants return by canoe across Mendenhall Lake to the starting point. The tour includes all National Park fees, bottled water, snacks, paddling gear, and instruction. Participants should be prepared to paddle five to six miles and must be able to swim. The tour requires a minimum of four participants and is open to those aged twelve and older, with a maximum weight limit of 250 pounds.
