Overview

This guided Johnston Canyon Icewalk in Banff National Park lasts about four hours and follows steel catwalks built into the canyon walls. The walk begins at the canyon entrance and passes through a natural cave where visitors can look down at the lower falls. The trail continues to the upper falls, which rise approximately 30 metres and form large towers of ice in winter. Ice climbers are often seen on these frozen columns. The route stays on the catwalks and does not involve walking directly on the ice for safety reasons. Along the way, the guide explains how the canyon was formed and points out local wildlife habitat. The tour includes ice cleats and a hiking pole for safety on the icy path. Groups are limited to 12 guests per professional guide. Participants receive a maple cookie snack and hot chocolate during the walk. Guests should wear warm ski clothing, including hats, mittens, and boots. A moderate level of fitness is recommended. Children aged 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must sign a waiver before the tour. If weather or trail conditions become unsafe, the tour operator may cancel the tour with options to reschedule or refund.
